In at least two recent young adult literature series (Cassandra Clare's Mortal Instruments, and the Twilight series) we find two groups that are at odds with each other; the vampires and werewolves. Is there any 'historical' or legendary reason given for this enmity, or is this simply a literary choice of the particular authors?

It's been going on even longer in Discworld. In Uberwald, there are great tensions between the vampires, the werewolves and the dwarfs. This appeared in detail in print 10 years ago in 'The Fifth Elephant', but probably was mentioned much earlier. Pratchett is very inventive, but also very often he is skitting something, so there could well be some basis for this enmity. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Discworld
