'Cup' in RP is nearer to 'cap' (as Northerners hear it), while in t'North it's a much shorter sound. RP 'cup' is said with a slight widening of the mouth, Northern with a narrowing. Bear in mind that Northern English isn't one thing. Lancashire differs from Yorkshire, Geordie differs again, and Scouse is yet different still. (RP of 'cap' tends towards 'kep'.)
