The term "banat" or "banate" designated a frontier province led by a military governor or ban. The word "ban" is probably of Slavic origin, meaning lord or governor. Thus, Banat may be translated loosely as "province". There were several banats in the medieval Kingdom of Hungary, such as the banats of Dalmatia, Slavonia, Bosnia and Croatia; these disappeared during the course of the Ottoman wars in Europe.
