Can you use a headphone amplifier to boost the microphone while recording?

yes, you will need a 1/8" (headphone size) coupler to connect the microphone output to the headphone amplifier input, then you will likely need another 1/8" wire with plugs at each end to connect to your recording device, unless your recording device has a wire with a headphone type plug attached to it to connect to an input.
