But that's not 'why'. There is no safe set answer, though. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dynamo_Theory gives one of the ideas - which I'm not going to describe fully. It's about liquid iron rotating and the complex things that go on in the Earth's core. Another theory is at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Georeactor#Dynamo_theory which is a variant of the Dymano Theory, but working differently. If you can't understand these, don't worry. There's a lot of people who would love to find a simple answer to this problem. They would like to find ANY sound provable answer.....
