What was the longest war in United States history?

Depends on you definition of war. Do you mean a 'declared' war, or a running conflict? The Vietnam War was not a declared war and US involvement in one form or other was at least twenty years. Then there is the Cold War from 1949-ish to mid 1990's. What about the 'Indian Wars' - was it one or many?

I agree with everything Moleman says, but historically the longest war in U.S. history and the costliest was the Vietnam War. There are several sites that attest to this, one is:

Another thing, though, Vietnam was not a declared war.
