according to wikipedia it has a religious meaning: Beatification (from Latin beatus, blessed, via Greek ìáêÜñéïò, makarios and Latin facere, make) is a recognition accorded by the Catholic Church of a dead person's accession to Heaven and capacity to intercede on behalf of individuals who pray in his or her name (intercession of saints). Beatification is the third of the four steps in the canonization process. A person who is beatified is given the title "Blessed"

It means to be blessed. "Pope John Paul II beatified more people than many of his predecessors combined".

I thought it was solely a religious term. The beatitudes are stated by Jesus in St Matthew's gospel. A pity this link is spoiled by the writer misspelling Matthew as Mattew!
