    What does it mean that hormones do not initiate new biochemical reactions, but produce their effects by regulating enzymatic and other chemical reactions, already present?

    		Hormones carry messages from one part of the body to another. Their presence affects reactions already either potentially or actually underway when they bind to a receptor protein, resulting in the activation of a signal transduction mechanism.
