The circumference is the distance around the curved surface, following a great circle (that is, the largest circle you can find on it surface). The diameter of the object is the diameter of such a great circle.

Why does pi = circumference divided by diameter?

Why was "pi" chosen to signify the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter?

We all learn Pi is the ratio of the diameter of a circle to its circumference, but is there an equivalent figure for the relation of the edge of a square and its diagonal, and if so does it have a name?
