Massage therapy focuses treatment on muscles and other soft tissues, whereas chiropractic therapy focuses on the bones of the skeleton, especially the vertebrae surrounding the spinal column, on the theory that these disorders affect general health via the nervous system. My personal chiropractor has a licensed massaged therapist on his staff; they work together with patients to help them overcome back, shoulder, and neck discomfort. “Masseuse” is a strictly female term; Monsieur Philippe, who gives back rubs down at the men’s gym, is a masseur.
