When United States Marines invaded the island of Iwo Jima during the Second World War, two flags were raised over Mount Suribachi during the course of the battle. What became of those flags? Were they lost? Were they destroyed? Does the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, DC, have custody of them? If they survived the battle, and were saved, where are they now?

Question #111916. Asked by hohohaha. (Jan 05 10 9:00 AM)

Both flags are conserved at the National Museum of the Marine Corps, in Quantico, Va. It's new museum, opened in 2006, shaped to evoke the image of the flag raising.
