While independent research and customer reviews may vary, Procter and Gamble, the owner of Gillette, claims on their website, http://www.pgbeautygroomingscience.com/index.php?id=845, to have conducted several studies showing the superiority of their new five-blade razor is superior to their ancient three-blade.
For instance, since there are more blades, you don't have to press as hard on your face to get the same cutting, so there's less skin irritation. Also, it's intuitively possible that the extra blades would reduce the time spent shaving. Though the total quality of the shave, closeness of the cut, would likely depend more on the sharpness of the blades, regardless of how many.
Unfortunately, P&G doesn't cite the studies on this page. So I just have to take their word that the studies exist, and of course their conclusions tend to be self-serving and not objective or independent. But you asked if there was any evidence, and this is it.
