Why does silver kill vampires?

I always assume it had something to do with the metabolic structure of vampires. Silver acts as a poison. Get as if someone cut you with a blade coated in cyanide.
Actually, after checking, it looks as if there is a religious component. Silver is known as a pure metal, and apparently vampires cannot come in contact with things which are pure.
