There are too many variables to give one sure answer. It depends on what state, province the crime was committed, how aggressive the prosecuters are, what is your criminal history, is there enough convincing evidence against you to merit a longer search, etc. In most cases of common law, two years seems to be the statute of limitations on misdemeanors not involving the small list above and, trust me, that list goes on and on. Good luck on layin low. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Statute_of_limitations

The statute of limitations refers to how long the prosecution has to bring charges after the commission of the crime. It has nothing to do with the situation posed by the questioner. If you become a fugitive after your conviction, there is no limit on bringing you back to face the sentence.
