The British monarch exercises the power to appoint and dismiss Prime Ministers. In fact, they appoint the leader of the party that won a parliamentary majority at election, but are not required to do so.

"The monarch could in theory unilaterally dismiss a Prime Minister, but in practice a Prime Minister's term now comes to an end only by electoral defeat, death, or resignation. The last monarch to remove a Prime Minister was William IV, who dismissed Lord Melbourne in 1834."

In countries which are members of the Commonwealth, the Queen's representative (in Australia, termed the Governor General) exercises the same powers on her behalf.
