Don't joke! In Australia (specifically, in Victoria, details may vary in other states) most schoolage MacDonald's employees (along with KFC, Subway, Pizza Hut, etc.) now get academic credentials officially stating that they have achieved competency in such transferable skills as balancing the till, serving customers, observing occupational health and safety procedures, etc. in an apprenticeship-like program. Registered training organisations monitor them, usually by means of workplace visitation, then their school registers their satisfactory achievements on the central computer database that is also used for the more 'academic' studies. They get certificates which include their traditional (VCE = Victorian Certificate of Education) subjects as well as a separate certificate for these VET (= Vocational Education and Training) subjects. Of course, most of them leave their job before they finish the certificate, but they can finish it off at a later stage if they end up in the drive-through window for the rest of their lives!
