What's the meaning of the word "daemon?" I see this when I get a mis-addressed email returned, and why was it chosen?

In the internet's standard e-mail protocol SMTP, a bounce message, or (failed) Delivery Status Notification (DSN) message, aka Non-Delivery Report/Receipt (NDR), Non-Delivery Notification (NDN), or simply a bounce is an automated electronic mail message from a mail system informing the sender of another message about a delivery problem. The original message is said to have bounced.
In Unix and other computer multitasking operating systems, a daemon is a computer program that runs in the background, rather than under the direct control of a user; they are usually initiated as background processes. Typically daemons have names that end with the letter "d": for example, syslogd, the daemon that handles the system log, or sshd, which handles incoming SSH connections.
