Trademark protection applies only to a trade mark, like the red triangle Bass ale uses. (Fun fact: Bass ale is supposedly the first recorded trademark in history.)
Copyright protection applies to artistic and written works. Sculptures and novels would fall under this category.
Furthermore, trademark protection has the potential to last indefinitely. As long as the trade mark is in use, the owner has a right to bring infringement suits. Right now, the term of a copyright is the lifetime of the owner plus 70 years after death.
