Some exercise bikes use 'magnetic resistance'. What is its purpose?

Question #112362. Asked by serpa. (Jan 23 10 11:45 PM)

When using an exercise bike with adjustable resistance, the user can adjust settings so that the effort needed to pedal the bike. "Exercise bikes provide adjustable resistance in one of two ways. The cheaper models use a tension belt. And the mid to high priced exercise bikes use magnetic resistance. Magnetic resistance is the superior choice for consistency and quiet operation."

Magnetic resistance basically takes advantage of the fact that metals moving through magnetic fields have a current induced in them ('dynamo effect'), and that this current then interacts with the original magnetic field so as to produce a resisting effect. The faster the wheel spins, and the stronger the magnetic field, the more the retarding force, so the harder you have to work.
