I was watching a British touring car race on TV when I noticed a fourth foot pedal located to the left of the clutch pedal. What is this pedal used for?

Are you sure it wasn't a rest plate?

It looked like the driver was using it between clutchinng and braking and there was definate movement of the pedal.

Most Mercedes-Benz cars (not the A and B classes) have a foot operated parking brake in that position. It's fine on the automatics, but a total pain on the manual ones. I can't see why anyone would be using it during a race, though, unless to minimise wheel slip.
