In backgammon, you play for normal stakes, unless one of the players uses the doubling cube. In a "plus 2" situation, this is the designation of the "FIRST" double to the stakes of the game: the player doubling has basically challenged his opponent, saying "I'll give you double the points if you win!" and the opponent has the option to accept the challenge, or to concede defeat. If accepted, he/she can in turn challenge the other player, doubling the stakes again, up to a plus 4 status. This can continue to a plus 8, a plus 16, a plus 32, a plus 64, and finally a plus 128.
