    		Stahlhelm (plural, Stahlhelme) is German for "steel helmet". The Imperial German Army began to replace the traditional boiled-leather Pickelhaube (spiked combat helmet) with the Stahlhelm during the First World War in 1916. The term Stahlhelm refers both to a generic steel helmet, and more specifically to the distinctive (and symbolic) German design.... The Stahlhelm is also able to take direct small arms fire. 9mm, and buckshot rounds with a direct hit with only causing minor dents or sometimes none to the helmet. It was a very effective helmet during World War 2, and very useful for defence against shrapnel.
