    		If someone wouldn't mind - for those of us who have never heard of closed-captioning and have never seen this little symbol, what's it all about?

    I should have made clear that closed captions are independent of the video stream and can be turned on and off at will. This is different from open captions (or subtitles) which are part of the picture and therefore always visible.
