How did the United States' dollar sign originate?

    Question #11263. Asked by bloomsby.

    Gnomon

The dollar sign ($) has been around since before the United States. Original it was used for the Spanish dollar which in Spanish were known as both pesos and piastres. The symbol was a P with a superscript s. When this was hand written quickly it degenerated into either the present dollar sign or a dollar sign with two vertical bars. Both of these were used for dollar. The US adopted the symbol when it set up its own currency.
