All of the former Soviet "Republics" had the initals SSR after them, however, the "Republic" of Russia had the initials SFSR. Why?

    Question #112743. Asked by star_gazer. (Feb 09 10 12:36 PM)

The initials stand for 'The Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic'. The title was used in the 1918 constitution. Presumably it was felt important to emphasise that the new republic was a grouping of smaller entities. The other republics became part of the Union later on, and were not themselves being formed from smaller units.
