What is the deposit leaked by old nicad batteries composed of, and is it dangerous?

Question #112974. Asked by satguru. (Feb 19 10 12:08 PM)

The cadmium in NiCad batteries tends to stay put even when the batteries leak. The problem arrises when 6 billion people toss their old batteries in the land fill/incinerator and spew it into the environment.

An intresting aside... my old company was supplying some electronics to IBM. Our contracts specifically stated that we would not use cadmium anywhere in the product (batteries, metal plating, etc). This was apparently their requirement for at least 30 years. Now the EU is trying to ban lead based solders. And don't forget that 6+ pounds of barium in every color CRT.

And the mercury in 'energy saving lightbulbs'. So I'd presume the green and white gunk that covers the terminals is a salt of something, but what exactly is it composed of if no cadmium?

Should NiCad, NiMH, and Li-ion batteries be completely dead before recharging or is it okay for them them to be partially dead?

Someone (who isn't trying to sell me batteries) tells me that if a remote with four batteries in it goes dead, you should replace all four batteries and not just the flat ones. Is there any reason for this or indeed any truth to it?

I have recently acquired a set of rechargable batteries that claim to hold 1000 times as much charge as a normal AA battery. will it actually charge the batteries to the same energy level 1000 time and then begin to store less as the batteries wear out or will the batteries be on a down hill slope, after the first use, that ends after 1000 charges, leaving them useless after that point ?
