Both of these items, the "iPhone touch" and the "iPod touch", were both released in 2007 by Apple Inc. The release of the iPhone touch was January 9th, and the iPod touch on June 17th. Steve Jobs of Apple announced both. The name of the first iPhone was just that, the "iPhone" and it is under copyright as such by Apple. This is the same with iPod. Yes, there were previous electronic devices that played mp3 music, and today the generic name most people use for all players is "iPod", but the first unit called "iPod" was released by Apple and they also hold the copyright for that name.
The first "iPhone" had a home default page which included the following "Touch Apps"; Messages, Calender, Photo, Camera, YouTube, Stocks, Maps, Weather, Voice Memos, Notes, Clock, Calculator, Settings, iTunes and App Store. Also, at the base of the home screen, there were 4 more mains apps, being Phone, Mail, internet Safari, and multimedia iPod.
The first "iPod" by Apple was modelled after the iPhone. The home screen included; Music, Videos, Photos, Calender, Calculator and Contact List, as well as Web Browsing & E-Mail via "Wi-Fi". The main menu has an icon for direct connection to YouTube and users of "iPod" are also able to purchase tunes on the road from the iTunes WiFi Music Store, as well as Starbucks coffee shops.
All information in this answer was taken from www.Answers.com. By typing "iPod touch" and "iPhone touch" into the search box, I was able to find the above information and links on the pages that arose from the search to find the information shown.
* I did not copy and paste the information as I did not what to mess with copyrights. What I did was open another window to Answers.com and typed the above answers from the website's information pages.
