Not sure if this is what you want, but Doyle based his character of Sherlock Holmes on Dr. Joseph Bell, a real physician-sleuth in Edinburgh during the 1870's.

Holmes' first name was to be 'Sherrinford' (and Watson was first called 'Ormond Sacker'!) Doyle named him for a cricket bowler named Sherlock and Oliver Wendell Holmes, the American essayist-doctor. See Vincent Starrett's 'The Private Life Of Sherlock Holmes'.
