In the Carling ad, with the guys on a desert island (part of the "You know who your mates are" campaign), it now ends with "Jamie" finding a stick, thus delaying and denying their possible rescue. Am I nuts, or was it a coconut until recently?

Question #113379. Asked by darkpresence. (Mar 12 10 2:37 PM)

    You remember correctly:

An epic piece shows shipwreck survivors on a desert island spotting a ship on the horizon after two years, and frantically calling out for a missing member of their number as rescue is imminent. As the ship is seen turning away, he reappears bearing yet another coconut. They gradually see the humour in the situation as a message appears declaring 'you know who your mates are' followed by the Carling logo.

Yes! Thanks Zbeck, any idea why they've changed it? Pressure from the coconut industry?

This forum says "coconut" is a racist term:

As does this: Coconut? That’s another racial term, this time for Indians (as in from India) who are westernized.

Coconut -- (New Zealand) A Pacific Islander. Named after the coconut, the nut from the coconut palm. (UK) A black person who exhibits behavior associated with caucasians; (US) a Hispanic person trying to be 'white'. (South Africa) A black person who acts white.

Oh my God, I hate the phrase but this is definitely political correctness gone mad. Coconut as a racist term? Never heard of it, but sure yes don't use it on tv. But coconut when referring to a coconut? That's totally ridiculous. All Oreo ads are to be banned next, no doubt. I love those fluffy snowball cakes, but I demand they be banned also. And as for cream crackers? They're outta here! It's also patently obvious how stupid this is; the Carlsberg ad now looks stupid. A stick? Perhaps they deliberately made it lame as a subtle protest.

I read somewhere recently that if there is a shortage of a certain constituent part of blood then in an emergency coconut milk can be used as an absolute last alternative. Is this true? What is the part that the milk is taking the place of?

I went to a Saturday matinee movie in about 1958 or 1959, and I saw a western that I'd love to find again. I don't think it had any big-name stars in it. The only part of the plot I remember: Two good guys - one older, one younger (perhaps a child) are trapped in a cabin that the bad guys are going to burn down. The older good guy digs a hole in the dirt floor of the cabin, puts the younger guy in the hole, and covers him with dirt. He has a stovepipe to breathe through, and a coffee can inverted over the end of the stovepipe, either to keep the dirt out or maybe so the bad guys won't realize he's under there. The house burns to the ground and the bad guys think they've killed both good guys, but the younger one actually survives. I think it was in color but I'm not even sure of that. If you don't know the film, do you know of other places I might ask?
