The magnet: URI scheme is a draft open standard defining a URI scheme for magnet links, which are mainly used to reference resources available for download via peer-to-peer networks. Such a link typically identifies a file not by location or name, but by content; more precisely, by the content's hash value.

ed2k links allow the file to be identified in a browser and transferred to eMule, eDonkey2000 or other compatible software. This linking feature was one of the first to be introduced in peer to peer file sharing. Now Magnet links serve a similar role, but are not limited to the ed2k hash and can contain other hashes such as SHA or MD5.

Azureus magnet links are a new way of linking torrent files. Instead of downloading the torrent from a webserver, you download it directly from a seed/leecher. The biggest advantage is that you might be able to download the content of the torrent, even if the tracker is down or closed for registration. You need the latest version of the Azureus client with DHT enabled (open your UDP port) to use this feature.
