Prince Maximilian Franz was also aware of Beethoven's gift, and so he sent Beethoven to Vienna, in 1787, to meet Mozart and to further his musical education. Vienna was, after all, the beacon city in terms of culture and music. There exist only texts of disputable authenticity on the subject of this meeting between Mozart and Beethoven. Mozart is thought to have said "Don't forget his name - you will hear it spoken often."!

The famous meeting would have occured in Mozart's home in Vienna in March or April of 1787. The house is a rather famous one, with many great events in the history of music having taken place there. It was there that Haydn is said to have praised Mozart in front of his father. It was there almost a century later that Julius Epstein referred to Johannes Brahms as "the heir of Beethoven". But it is best known as the house where Mozart wrote his operas "The Marriage of Figaro" and "Don Giovanni" (hence it is called the "Figarohaus"), and where he met Beethoven according to legend. Exactly how the meeting went is unknown, but Beethoven did want to study composition with Mozart, and was unable to stay in Vienna when he found out his mother was dying in Bonn, so they never met after 1787.
