There is no official maximum. Most wine is in the range of 10 - 12% alcohol. High quality wines can reach 13.5%. Above this, special strengthening techniques must be used, such as sun-drying the grapes for Amarone (15-16%). Since Table Wines is inferior quality, it is usually only around 12%. An exception might be Italian wine. Here the term 'table wine' must be used by law for any wine which includes grape varieties which are not original Italian. Since Cabernet Sauvignon, the number one grape for red wine, is not considered Italian, any wine containing it must be labelled Table Wine. Some very high quality Table Wines are produced, some of which would reach 13%.
