How has a territorial dispute between India and Bangladesh recently come to an end?

Question #113656. Asked by unclerick. (Mar 26 10 9:20 AM)

Even though it is more of a result of rising sea levels and global warming than the grand plans of nature, the disappearance of an island has kind of “solved” a point of territorial dispute between India and Bangladesh. The tiny, uninhabited island was about six feet above sea level at its highest point, and recent satellite images seem to suggest that the island has been gobbled up by the rising water.

Both countries have, for years staked claim on the island that was situated towards the south of the Hariabhanga river. With its disappearance though, other issues like a similar fate for nearby islands and trouble for the Sunderbans Delta region have come to fore. Professor Sugata Hazra of the School of Oceanographic Studies at Jadavpur University in Calcutta, says that the water is rising much faster in the said part of the Bay of Bengal, over the said decade, as compared to the 15 years preceding it.
