What is the world's deadliest mushroom?

    Question #113855. Asked by star_gazer. (Apr 03 10 4:10 PM)

The deadliest mushroom in the world is Amanita phalloides commonly known as the death cap. This poisonous mushroom is widely distributed across Europe. They appear in summer and autumn; the caps are generally greenish in color, with a white stripe and gills. Fifty percent of mushroom poisoning is attributed to death cap. The death cap damages the liver and kidneys, often fatally. No antidote is known. It is estimated that 30 grams (1 oz), or half a cap, of this mushroom is enough to kill a human. In 2006, a family of three in Poland was poisoned, resulting in one death and the two survivors requiring liver transplants. Toxicity is not reduced by cooking, freezing, or drying.

Notable victims of death cap poisoning include Roman Emperor Claudius, Pope Clement VII, Tsaritsa Natalia Naryshkina, and Holy Roman Emperor Charles VI.

NO MUSHROOM is worthier of fear than the terribly poisonous Death Cap (Amanita phalloides). This single, widespread species of mushroom is solely responsible for the majority of fatal and otherwise serious mushroom poisoning cases, worldwide as well as in North America. Indeed, one might argue that the Death Cap's notorious, relatively frequent victimization of Homo sapiens is far and away the best explanation (or rationalization) for the widespread fear of edible wild mushrooms.

The cap is 2ΒΌ--6" (6--16 cm) wide, smooth, with greenish to yellowish pigments, usually sticky or slippery but sometimes dry, often adorned with one to several patches of thin white veil tissue. The gills are white, crowded together, and very finely attached to the upper stalk. In young specimens, a white, membranous partial veil tissue extends from the edge of the cap to the upper stalk, covering the gills (later remaining attached to and draping from the upper stalk). The spore print is white. The stalk is white to pallid, up to 6" (15 cm) long or tall, with a large rounded bulb at the base; the bulb includes a white sac-like volva.

I am going to have to say that the Atomic Bomb is the world's deadliest mushroom. Once this mushroom begins to sprout everything in a massive radius is instantly destroyed. Of the various breeds i would have to say the tzarbomb is the most deadly variety.

Why is it that Australia has such a high proportion of the worlds deadliest creatures? And why also do many of these creatures, such as a funnel web spider, pack so much toxicity they could kill a very large mammal when their diet consists of insects and small lizards?

I'm looking for the name of a TV mini series movie/show. We had rented them from the video store. It's about a boy who is traveling to different worlds looking for pieces of a machine to get him back home (I think.) He is gathering something along his way. He travels to different worlds with a "professor" and maybe another person. Along the way he visits 5-8 different worlds (each was a different movie.) They were all entitled "Somebody and the Land of ???" One world had to do with giant eggs, one world a town of toys, and the end was a land something like a fantasy "Camelot." My children watched these movies anywhere from 1988 - 1993. I'm hoping someone can help me end my frazzled search.

If you boil fresh mushrooms in water then even after hours on the stove the liquid still doesn't have have any real mushroom flavor, but if you boil sun dried or dehydrated mushrooms for just fifteen minutes you end up with a deep brown liquid that has a very strong mushroom flavor. Why?
