In what does poteen differ from ordinary Irish whiskey?

Poitín or Poteen is a term traditionally applied to home-distilled liquor made from malted barley or potatoes. Irish moonshine, and usually much stronger than legal liquors. "Today, two Irish brands are officially licensed to produce poitín, Knockeen Hills, and Bunratty.[3] Their products are however, far removed from the coarse illegal poitin produced in the past. Indeed Bunratty is only 40% ABV, far weaker than illegally distilled poitin. Knockeen Hills however, comes in at 90% ABV."
