I was born in the second half of the 19th century. In my early life I spent a short time as a writer, but events put an end to that. I enjoyed life as an artist, being an accomplished painter. Later I become involved in trade and worked on social reform to improve the prison system. I developed an interest in aviation and flew aircraft. I tried to get elected to parliment but was defeated. During the 1930s many saw me as a right wing extremist. I saw active service in World War II. I returned to writing for a few years and was rewarded for my efforts. I spent some time in the United States, and died in the second half of the 20th century. Who am I?

While there appear to be some similarities, I doubt it is Churchill, who was successfully elected to Parliament, and who spent WWII as Lord of the Admiralty (in Cabinet), not on active service.

I don't think he ever learned to fly, either... Or got involved in trade. He was PM for most of WWII.
Not Wyndham Lewis - he painted, wrote and then painted. But I'll admit I haven't yet found an aviator who painted, or a painter who aviated.

Yes Jolana send you the million dollar prize later. Don't know about the flying did he get in the air, I think there was something about a crash, not sure, maybe someone can fill us in. The active service well sitting in a ship miles out to sea and having it fire on a target it can't reach, well, um, call it what you like, did like action though, the King did order Winston not to go with the troops on D Day, and no one can say he didn't enjoy a good war!

"In 1911, Churchill was transferred to the office of the First Lord of the Admiralty, a post he held into World War I. He gave impetus to several reform efforts, including development of naval aviation (he undertook flying lessons himself)"
