What is the difference in the mechanism of drum brakes and disc brakes?

    Question #114064. Asked by navonil1. (Apr 12 10 1:10 AM)

    Watchkeeper

Drum brakes have a pair of crescent-shaped brake shoes inside a drum attached to the wheel. When operated the shoe faces are forced against the inside rim of the drum, creating the friction which stops the wheel.

Disc brakes have pads on opposite sides of a steel disc attached to the wheel. When operated the pads "pinch" the disc and stop the wheel.
