    Does cold water properly wash clothes?

    Question #114182. Asked by star_gazer. (Apr 18 10 1:04 PM)

    From site;

    Using cold water during a laundry cycle is now more energy efficient, as well as better for your clothing. Many laundry detergents are now made for cold water cycles and clean just as effectively as hot water. Switching from hot water to cold water will extend the life of the clothing, as well as save money on your next electric bill.

    What makes washing in cold water effective? A new genre of cold water detergents designed to enhance the effectiveness of cold water washing in both traditional and high-efficiency machines, such as the popular Tide Coldwater (to see information about performance, click here), would have us believe it's the soap that makes cold water work. However, it's not always necessary to use specially-formulated detergents for cold water washes in order to get good results; regular detergents in traditional washers can work just as well. The key is experimentation.

    What about the machine itself? "Cold water washing has many benefits," says Ellis Mass, Director of Brand Communications for LG's home appliance division. "It lengthens the life of garments, and lowers electric bills, but there is a tradeoff. Cold water typically does not give clothing as thorough a cleaning as hot or warm water." To combat cold water worries, LG recently introduced a top-loading and front-loading washer with proprietary technology that allows cold water to penetrate clothing just as well as warmer water. The cold water may penetrate deeply, but does it clean? Yes, says Mass, thanks to the unique way the washing machines move the clothing around using multiple motions.

    What are the downsides of washing in chilly temps? If there is a downside to washing with cold water, it's that both liquid and powder detergents dissolve more slowly in cold water, resulting in possibly duller clothing. Additionally, articles with excessive grease, oil, and dirt stains may not clean well in cold water.
