    Besides Russia, why did Nicaragua, Venezuela and Nauru recognize South Ossetia as an independent republic?

    		Nicaragua followed Russia indeclaring South Ossetia probably because Russia supported Ortega against US-backed contras in the 1980s. Venezuela also supported Russia because the US was criticizing Russsia, and Chavez seems determined to go against the US in most political and military matters. Nauru backed Russia in recognizing South Ossetia because Russia promised $50 million in humanitarian aid.
