I have read that some North American Indian tribes made a form of beer. How was this done and how potent was it?

Tiswin is an early form of beer made from ground up corn by the Apaches or the saguro cactus by the Tohono O'odham. The potency of the drink would be dependant on the sugar content of the corn or cactus used, and was not regulated or strictly controlled.
