When was the first leap year?

The first proper leap year (that is, according to today's criteria for being a leap year) was 1752, when the British Empire switched to the Gregorian calendar. However, leap years (occuring every 4 years without any other criteria) existed since the 2nd century BC

The first leap year was 46 B.C.E. It was then that the Julian calander of 365.25 days was adopted. The calander required that an extra day be added every fourth year.
