How do sites like Facebook make money? Is it purely from selling advertising space on their pages?

Question #114298. Asked by guitargoddess. (Apr 24 10 6:52 PM)

Well not purely I'm sure but, sites that are free to its users (Google for example and Facebook) make money by selling space on their pages to companies for advertising. (links on the side of every Google search for example)

"The way in which Facebook makes money is actually quite simple. Have you ever noticed that
advertisements that exist on the side of the page? These advertisements are referred to as Facebook ads. Companies pay Facebook a hefty fee for these advertisements that reach millions of people on Facebook on a daily basis."
