The first movie that he directed was "The Last Gun", an 8-minute long wester in 1959. His first "major" film that he directed was "Sugarland Express" in 1974, starring Goldie Hawn.

From the link provided by mikey40uf, the earliest film listed on imdb is "The Last Gun (1959). "Battle Squad" and "Escape to Nowhere" were also short films from 1961. The earliest full-length film listed is "Firelight" (1964). There are a number of others, before the one identified as his first 'major' film (presumably referring to the status of the studio and/or budget). There is no technical agreed-on definition of a 'major' film. "Duel" is described on imdb as 'a unique and classic early directing project, Duel (1971) (TV)'. Most do not include made-for-TV as major film work.
