How long does radiation stay in an area? Does it last like a month or so then leave?

Question #114815. Asked by DMKTENN. (May 22 10 6:01 PM)

It depends on the type of radiation. Different half-lives are involved with different types of ionizing radiation.

Uranium- 235 has a half life of 700 million years
    Polonium-210 has a half-life of 138 days
    Polonium-208 has a half-life of almost 3 years

"Half-life. The time required for half the nuclei in a sample of a specific isotopic species to undergo radioactive decay."

Half-life tells you the time it takes for half of the radiation due to decay from a particular source to disappear. How long there continues to be a dangerous level of radiation in an area would therefore also depend on the original quantity. The level would halve as each half-life passes, but still could be quite high if there were a lot to start with.
