The Atlantic magazine took into account property, savings, salary, inheritance and royalties when calculating, in present dollars, how much each of the 43 men who have been president were worth at their peak. Forbes must be referring to Jefferson before he went to Paris and spent all his money. He may be the president who lost the biggest fortune!
