Who were the two wealthiest US presidents?

    Question #114979. Asked by star_gazer. (May 29 10 9:44 PM)

George Washington and Thomas Jefferson are the two wealthiest US presidents, although I do not believe it takes into account inflation.

The Atlantic magazine took into account property, savings, salary, inheritance and royalties when calculating, in present dollars, how much each of the 43 men who have been president were worth at their peak. JFK, due to family money, was valued at a whopping $1 billion, whereas George Washington, who had massive land and slave holdings, checked in at $525 million.

Forbes must be referring to Jefferson before he went to Paris and spent all his money. He may be the president who lost the biggest fortune!

"Although he was born into one of the wealthiest families in North America, Thomas Jefferson was deeply in debt when he died."

Here is the Forbes list from its own site; it is the same as the one given above:
    http://www.forbes.com/2003/02/14/cx_da_0214pres.html

Yet, the same year--2007--Forbes seems to have prepared another list that I personally find more accurate:

    Top 5 Richest Presidents

    1. George Washington, 1789-1797
    2. John F. Kennedy, 1961-1963
    3. Andrew Jackson, 1829-1837
    4. Lyndon B. Johnson, 1963-1969
    5. Herbert Hoover, 1929-1933

None of these sources indicate whether the President's wealth being considered was while in office, at death, or at his flushest moment.

Star's link notes that today, ex-presidents become richer, citing Clinton's increase and predicting Obama's.
