The Society of the Cincinnati is the oldest. Founded in 1783, its purpose was to preserve the ideals and fellowship of the Revolutionary War officers. It also was created to pressure the government to honor pledges it had made to officers who fought for American independence.
The Society continues to promote interest in the American Revolution with libraries, exhibitions, museums and many other activities.
