Who was the US newspaper magnate responsible for one of the Isle of Man's claims to fame?

Question #115420. Asked by Grandon. (Jun 21 10 9:09 AM)

    Datsmeharse

The flamboyant James Gordon Bennett, Jr., 1841-1918, who succeeded his father as editor and publisher of the New York Herald, lived in France from 1877. He founded the Automobile Club of France, and sponsored Cup auto races throughout Europe, creating the first racng series ever.
One such venue was the Isle of Man, where the Bennett Cup soon evolved into the Tourist Trophy Races for motorcycles, once the premier race of its kind in the world. The Isle of Man was chosen initially because it was remote enough to allow for speeds exceeding 20mph (UK had set the limit in 1903.) The course lost its World Championship status in the 1970's, when, due to the high danger of the course, the leading riders boycotted it.
