Kennedy assassination: Nov. 22, 1963
The NY Times is now reporting the Dow-Jones Industrial Average (DJIA)
instead of its own index. News hit the trading floor at 1:41 p.m. and
the DJIA -- which had been up in heavy trading that day -- plunged
21.16 points before the Exchange closed at 2:07 p.m. The closing DJIA
was 711.49, off 21.16.

The NY Stock Exchange was closed within 40 minutes of the news of Kennedy's assassination, in order to prevent panic selling. The Dow Jones Index did lose 21 points, down to 711.49 - although when the Stock Exchange reopened the following Monday it experienced its biggest-ever one-day rally, up 32 points.
Trading was vulnerable that day (22 November) even before news of the assassination. Two major brokers, Williston & Beane and Ira Haupt & Co. had been backers, unknowingly, of a major futures scam (on vegetable oil and soybean) run by Tino De Angelis, and this had been uncovered shortly before. On the morning of the 22nd, before the news from Dallas came through, there were talks in the Exchange about a takeover of Williston & Beane to provide some level of protection to its investors. Closing the Exchange shortly afterwards possibly saved the extra loss of millions of dollars, from the fallout of both the assassination and Tino's dodgy dealings.
