Why are older NASCAR games called 'NASCAR Thunder' and then the year?

Three editions of EA Sports's long-running NASCAR series bear the name "NASCAR Thunder" - those representing the years 2002, 2003, and 2004. But not all older versions of the NASCAR series bear that name. Prior to "NASCAR Thunder 2002", and after "NASCAR 06: Total Team Control", the games were known simply as NASCAR XX, with the XX representing the last two digits of the representative year.
