Why are there tiny holes in the ceilings of cars?

    Question #116042. Asked by star_gazer. (Jul 16 10 5:42 PM)

I can't locate an online reference for this, but it appears in a high-school Physics text as a practical example of acoustic engineering. The small holes mean the fabric has a greater capacity to absorb vibrational noises while the car is operating.

Early today, I checked the ceiling of my car ('97 Camry), and it didn't have any little holes. So this is the case with only some cars.

looney_tunes is on target with his answer; the holes help to absorb sound. These holes can also be seen in the ceiling of many schools and offices.

This is a photo of car visors that have the holes that we speak of.
